This easy moss stitch crochet blanket pattern is a perfect project for a beginner who would like to add a handmade touch to their home. The pattern is easy to adapt to baby sizes for baby afghans and cot blankets.
The moss stitch crochet throw looks amazing on a couch or a chair and combines that heirloom look that is so popular right now with crochet.
The moss stitch one of the easiest stitches to master and is a very common stitch in crochet. It is also sometimes called the linen stitch or seed-stitch but is simply is an alternating SC (single crochet, US terms) and a CH, (chain.)
The nifty part of this stitch is the ease of turning at the end of each row. All you need to do is find the space between the CH 2 turning chain and last SC. When you start working this, you’ll know exactly what I’m saying and love it! If you want a more detailed tutorial on how to do the moss stich – watch our “How-to” video HERE
This crochet modern moss stitch blanket can be made with any yarn you choose. We made ours in MOYA® Bulky Plush which is SUPER-SOFT, and the hand-dyed cotton gives it a retro, vintage look. Although this is a South African yarn, we have given some alternatives through the retailer links above. We especially recommend Lion Brand HOMESPUN, or any of the natural fibre range from Knitpicks.
Finished size approximately 160cm x 120cm (63in x 48in), but you can always customize and do your own size. Remember that you should always have an even number of stitches on your chain to keep an even edge. If you want your stripes to run vertically on a rectangular blanket, then start from the longest side and work across the blanket.
Easy Moss Stitch Crochet Blanket PATTERN
Chain 141 in your main shade (this is just a suggested number, if it is too long for your taste, just work any ODD number you wish so estimate the length. If you are doing vertical stripes, then do a long chain.)
ROW 1:
SC in the 4th chain from the hook, *CH 1, SK 1 CH, SC in the next CH* repeat to the end of the row. (The last stitch should be a SC in the last chain.) CH 2 and turn.
If you’re not familiar with these terms, watch the video to get comfortable with the stitch. Basically you need to do is chain one after you make that first single crochet, skip the next chain, and single crochet into the next one. Repeat working a single crochet, chain one, skip over the chain space until you get to the end of the row.
ROW 2:
SC in the CH 1 space, *CH 1, SK next SC, SC into the CH 1 SP* repeat to the end working your final SC into the space between the last SC and CHs. CH 2 and turn.
(Single crochet in the chain 1 space from the row below, chain once, skip over the single crochet in the row below. Work a single crochet into the chain one space. Repeat this all the way across and find the space between the last single crochet and the turning chains. Chain 2 and turn.)
ROWS 3-8:
repeat in MS if you’re doing stripes, continue in MS if doing a plain blanket.
ROW 9:
before you finish pulling all the way through with MS in your final SC, stop and pull through with CS. Work the turning chains in black and then work the moss stitch across. Stop again just before you finish pulling through the last single crochet and pull through with white.
ROWS 10-12:
repeat in MS for stripes. if using a plain yarn then just proceed.
ROW 13:
work in CS, using the same instructions from ROW 9.
ROWS 14-21:
repeat in MS for stripes.
You then work *8 rows in MS, 1 row in CS, 3 rows in MS, 1 row in CS, repeat *.
Repeat until you have 14 stripes of CS.
Weave in all ends before you start the border or use the magic knot if you’re like me and hate weaving.
For the border, pull up a loop in CS in any side stitch and work a SC into the chain one spaces. Then CH 1 and skip over the SC. Essentially working the moss stitch around. Work one extra set into each corner. Slip stitch to join and then weave in all ends.
