The Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch (HHDC) is extremely easy and creates the distinctive Herringbone arrow-shape on the surface of the fabric.
In fact, Herringbone stitches take the normal version of a stitch and effectively add a slip stitch when you pull the yarn through in the first part of the stitch. As a result, this creates an angle for the stitch and what gives it the herringbone / tweed look.
Fun but difficult to shape:
This pattern is extremely difficult to shape, and does not work in the round, so the Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch needs to be used in flat pieces. Herringbone patterns are a classic in menswear. In fact, it would work beautifully for a masculine scarf. Likewise, this stitch is also great for cozy afghans and baby blankets!
This stitch can create quite an opaque fabric so is ideal for garments but it is also great for cushions, blankets and other accessories. It can especially be recommended for baby blankets due to the closed texture which means little fingers won’t get caught in the holes.
Once you know how to do one stitch, the next stitch along is intuitive. Essentially, there is no stitch pattern, just work as many stitches as you want in rows!
1: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch
2: Yarn over, pull a loop through the stitch and continue to pull through the next loop on the hook (2 loops left on hook)
3: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops to complete the stitch
