The bean crochet stitch can take a bit of getting used to at at first, but it is well learning as it gives an amazing texture to any project. This stitch is also great for blankets, wraps or any double-sided item as both front and back views are identical! The bean crochet stitch creates a wonderfully thick, warm fabric that is perfect for winter accessories like hats and scarves.
The bean stitch is an old stitch that is a great way to play with colour and self striping yarns. Generally speaking, it’s easier than the puff stitch. In fact, it creates a slanted, interlocking stitch which looks like basket weave.
Once you get the hang of it, this stitch will go quickly and is a lot of fun to work with!
A fun variation on the bean stitch is the mini bean (or Elizabeth) stitch!
How to do the Bean Crochet Stitch:
Begin by crocheting a foundation chain in a multiple of 2 plus 1. (For a practice swatch, try chaining 21).
Row 1
- Find the THIRD chain stitch from your hook.
- Insert your hook and bring up a loop.
- YARN OVER. Insert your hook into the same chain stitch and bring another loop up. You should have FOUR loops on your hook now.
- YARN OVER again. Insert your hook again into the same chain stitch and bring up another loop. You should now have SIX loops on your hook.
- YARN OVER once more. Pull yarn all the way through the SIX loops on your hook. You should be back to one loop now.
- Chain 1.
- Congratulations! You’ve now completed ONE bean stitch!
- To continue–skip the next chain stitch.
- Work the bean stitch (steps 2 through 6) in the next chain stitch.
- Skip the next chain stitch, work the bean stitch in the following stitch. Continue in this manner to the end of the row.
- Chain 2 and turn your work.
Row 2
- Locate the space created by the CHAIN 1 next to the bean stitch in the prior row.
- Work the bean stitch in the CHAIN 1 space.
- Chain 1.
- Skip the next bean stitch.
- Work a bean stitch in the CHAIN 1 space.
- Continue steps 2 through 5 to the end of the row.
- Chain 2 and turn your work.
To continue, repeat ROW 2 to your desired length!
