This super-simple Midland Crochet Basket Pattern is ideal for beginners and a great way to store your yarn stash!
Although the recommended yarns is Lion Brand “Fast Track” (super-bulky weight – 6). However, this has since been discontinued. Fortunately, good matching alternatives are Wool and the Gang Mixtape Yarn or Hoooked Zpagetti Solid. However, the Hoooked option is the more cost-effective option. We’ve also done these baskets in super-bulky cotton yarn and they have worked up fantastically well!
About the pattern:
This crochet basket pattern is worked in one piece in joined rounds in single crochet. As a result, the right side is always facing, beginning at center of base which gives it a smooth outer finish.
The yarn color is changed to make stripes. However, changing color is easy – simply work the last stitch of the round with old color, then working joining with a slip stitch. Then insert your hook in first stitch of the round. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the joining slip stitch. Proceed with new color and fasten off old color.
In addition, the handles are worked into the last few rounds at top of the basket.
The finished circumference is approximately 36 in. (91.5 cm) and height is about 14 in. (35.5 cm).
However, we do suggest that for a stiffer basket that you go down one hook size for a stiffer basket.
